A recent survey* by SK-II has suggested that around the world, millions of women feel pressured to achieve specific things by a certain age, in order to avoid feeling like they are falling behind or not meeting expectations set by society. In particular, 1 out of 3 women in Asia feel like there’s an expectation to follow a pre-decided timeline for how to live your life in order to feel like they are meeting the societal markers of success, with only 2 out of 10 women in Asia being comfortable with the idea of getting older.Coming from a traditional Chinese background, I too have felt like one of these people before. From the pressure of getting married, to achieving certain career goals and having kids all at the same time, sometimes it feels like it’s all too much and how is it even possible to do all these things if you have other goals and interests in life or want to pave your own life path?  I’m sure some of you have also felt similar age related pressures growing up. All the things you are expected to have completed by the time you are say 30, might not be the things you personally were keen to rush through so soon. The 'tried and tested' stable pathway has never been one that I felt I could follow if I wanted to be true to myself. But really, you shouldn’t feel pressured by your age. It’s hard to stay true to your own personal self when society is trying to tell you something else. Make your own goals and your own happiness in life. Listen to your heart, search for what it really wants and set out your own road map to achieve what your heart craves.  Not every path to success is the same and not everyone’s definition of success is the same either. Always be proud of what you have achieved because everybody’s journey is different.. Age is just a number! There is so much beauty in getting older. The wisdom, the deeper understanding of oneself and others, the beauty of wrinkles from smiling too much.. We should totally embrace every birthday forward, rather than fear the idea of it.SK-II’s survey also showed that women don’t really talk about these issues, but the more we share our thoughts about it, the more we can empower others to feel they have the freedom to choose their journey, rather than someone else choose it for them. So let’s start a conversation right now. How do you handle these pressures from society and how do you make sure you’re in charge of being you? Would love to hear in the comments below!
